Schenectady City School District Receives National Recognition for its Support for Arts Education

NYSAAE is proud to announce that the Capital Region's Schenectady City School District is this year's winner of the 20th annual Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network (KCAAEN) and National School Boards Association (NSBA) Award.  This award recognizes one school board in the United States for its support of the arts in its school district.

Schenectady Board of Education members Jeff P. Janazewski and Lisa Russo were on hand at NSBA's March 31st annual conference to accept the award and $10,000 prize.

The New York State Alliance for Arts Education, having nominated the school district at the state level, is elated at their national-level recognition.  Executive Director Jeremy Johannesen stated, "it is evident that the [Schenectady City School District's] school board provides support for a wide variety of courses for students in the arts, and educators in the district adhere to sequential, standards-based arts curricula, producing high-quality programs that enable students to learn in and through the arts in a meaningful way."

School districts selected for this national award demonstrate dedicated support for all four artistic disciplines in their arts education program, including music, dance, theater, and visual arts.  Johannesen commended the Schenectady school board for their partnerships with renowned cultural institutions, affording Schenectady school district's students with first-class experience in exemplary arts in education programs.

NYSAAE extends their congratulations to the Schenectady City School Board and District.  Their commitment to the arts has truly made them a model for arts education across the state and throughout the country.
