Superintendent
Recognition Award
Believing that the influence of school
superintendents is a major factor in improving
arts education in school systems across the
state, NYSAAE presents the Annual School Superintendent
Recognition Award to a New York State school
district superintendent who demonstrates outstanding
support for, and commitment to, high-quality
sequential arts education programs in their
schools. This is one way of recognizing
an exceptional school superintendent, and
to attract public attention to school-based
arts education. Applications are due
to NYSAAE by October 31, 2008.

School
Board Recognition Award
The School Board Recognition Award is
an annual award presented to a New York State
school board that has demonstrated support
for, and commitment to, high-quality arts
education in its school district and community.
This state-level award recognizes districts
that have included all four major artistic
disciplines - visual arts, music, theatre,
and dance - in their programs. The final
selection from New York State is sent to the
Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education
Network (KCAAEN), to be included in a national
pool of nominees. The national award
is administered by KCAAEN and the National
School Board Association. State-level
nominations are due to NYSAAE by October
31, 2008.

International
Young Soloist Music Program
NYSAAE announces
the 2009 VSA arts International Young Soloists
Award Call for Entries. Since 1984,
the VSA arts International Young Soloists
Program has been seeking to identify talented
musicians who have a disability. The
VSA arts International Young Soloists Award
is given annually to four outstanding musicians,
two from the United States, and two from the
international arena. The award provides
an opportunity for these emerging musicians
to each earn a $5,000 award, and a performance
in Washington, D.C. Applications are
due to NYSAAE by November

Summer
Music Institute
The
Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra
Summer Music Institute is a 4-week summer
music program at the John F. Kennedy Center
for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.
This program is open, by recorded audition,
to student instrumentalists who are seriously
considering orchestral music as a career,
and who are in grades 9 through 12 or a college
freshman or sophomore. Nominations are
due to NYSAAE by January
30, 2009. Five selected applicants
from New York State will go on to the Kennedy
Center for a further selection process. To

John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing
Arts Schools of Distinction In Arts Education
Awards (formerly known as Creative
Ticket Awards)
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing
Arts Schools of Distinction In Arts Education
Awards are annual awards presented to schools
that exemplify arts integrated education,
specifically the role that schools play in
providing a creative learning environment
for outstanding student achievement.
State winners are submitted for consideration
at the national level, where winners receive
a modest honorarium to support their programs,
a plaque for display in their building, and
the opportunity to perform at the Kennedy
Center as part of KCAAEN events. State-level
Schools of Distinction nominations are due
to NYSAAE by March
27, 2009.
To
be considered for the State level of this
award, your school's arts education program
should have most of the following characteristics:

Your school should teach all the arts
(music, dance, visual arts, and theatre) as
specific disciplines as well as
integrated into other subject areas.
-
Your program should use creative approaches
to learning, provide appropriate learning
environments for teaching the arts, and
recognize that the arts are critical and
essential to education.
-
Your program should provide opportunities
for parental involvement in the
educational lives of their children.
-
Your program should provide students various
opportunities for learning about other
cultures through the arts, enabling them to
explore differences in ways that are devoid
of cultural bias.
-
Your program should provide community
connections that build value and respect
for the community by offering students
diverse experiences beyond the classroom.

Robert
J. Ludwig Scholarship
The
Robert J. Ludwig Scholarship provides two
individuals full registration to any given
NYSAAE sponsored professional development
offerings. The purpose of the scholarship
is to increase accessibility to professional
development opportunities for arts teachers,
general classroom educators, teaching artists
and school administrators.
Applications
must be received by the NYSAAE not less than
one month prior to the date of the program
applying for scholarship to attend. Applicants
will be notified no later than two weeks prior
to the date of the program. Applications are
review by the NYSAAE program committee and
all determinations are final. Award is for
registration fees only – no cash awards will
be made. Applicant is responsible for travel,
lodging, meals and all other expenses incurred
in conjunction with the program. Only one
award per person per calendar year.
