For the 2010 calendar year NYSAAE awarded funds to seven schools for artist residencies focusing on Music, Theatre Arts, Literary Arts, Visual Arts, and Dance.

"Dance in Social Studies with 3rd Grade Students"

Partnering Cultural Organziation: eba Dance

four, third grade girls stand holding chinese fans in front of their faces Third grade students learned about Japan, Ireland, and Brazil though way of traditional dance, music and the visual arts, including specific dance steps and patterns, meaning of the dance, costumes, musical rhythms, instruments and indigenous folk arts. They also focused on world social studies, including the affects of the environment (geography, weather, etc.) on type of government, personal characteristics, dress, food, utensils, and architecture.

"Bringing Out Stories to Life"

Partnering Cultural Organization: Nancy Marie Payne

teaching artist works with students This project supported the literacy development of the Berne Elementary School’s 5th grade students. Teaching artist, Nancy Marie Payne, storyteller, introduced the arts of story telling through performance and participation activities.

During the residency the students explored:

-the literary elements of a specific story and the respective roles of characters
-concepts of character, setting, and plot
-techniques for learning stores such as storyboards, mime, and imagery

"Tree of Life Mosaic"
Canajoharie Middle School

Partnering Cultural Organization: Joshua Winer

Through this residency students obtained a deeper understanding of glass mosaic medium and a deeper understanding of the Celtic symbol of the tree to represent life force, connectedness, strength, rebirth and wisdom. After extensive research in the art, language arts, and science rooms via computers, students learned not only about the history of the mosaic medium, but also how the symbol of the tree of life has been carried down over the centuries.

"Rocking for Character"

Partnering Cultural Organization: Song Spun Productions

fourth and fifth grade students perform songs with teaching artist This project integrated music and language arts into the character education curriculum. Fourth and fifth grade students worked with teaching artist, Brian Chevalier, to create two character education songs. In guiding the students to create their songs, Brian stressed the writing process and guided the students in conversation around the meaning behind the song, words and lyrics. Students communicated their character education lyrical message through devices of music.

"The Firebird"

Partnering Cultural Org.: The Puppet People

By working with the teaching artist and art specialist, as well as classroom, special education teachers, and parents, the students designed and created their own puppets as a means to express emotion. Student wrote personal narratives and skits. Using their puppets as props, third graders presented to younger children with the cooperation of the school’s social worker.

"Louder Than a Bomb II"

Partnering Cultural Organization: The Capital Repertory Theatre

Over the course of six weeks, eighth grade students worked with their classroom teacher on an ELA unit in which multiple forms of poetry were discussed and explored.

photo of book, Bronx Masquerade Simultaneously, this diverse group of students read Nikki Grime’s young adult novel, Bronx Masquerade, which tells the story of a group of urban teenagers who discover the value in their diversity through slam poetry event called “Open Mike Fridays”. The Rensselaer Middle School students read this novel and had their own Open Mike Friday every week. Students learned the basics elements of public speaking and performance through their participation in each Open Mike Fridays.

"Celtic Footprints"
Scotia Glenville Elementary Schools
Partnering Cutural Org.: Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company

During this residency students experienced stories of Celtic culture through movement, words and music. During five sessions, activities reinforced the interrelationship of movement, music and musical instruments, and words as in the performance. Each day students were exposed to new vocabulary and incorporated this vocabulary, as well as reflective responses, into daily journals.
